The story takes place in Los Angeles many years in the future where the lives of notorious criminal Day and teen prodigy turned government agent June cross when Junes brother is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. Marie Lu's first novel certainly shines and I can't wait for the next one.

You may also like:

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Uglies by Scott Westerfeld

Divergent by Veronica Roth

Matched by Ally Condie

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

Angels, portals to other worlds, teeth collecting, black hand prints on doors...What could all of these things have to do with lonely art student Karou? Written by Rick Yancey, the series takes place in the late-1800's and follows the early life of William James Henry, a boy who is orphaned when his parents are killed by a fire. Rather than going to an orphanage he is taken in by his fathers former employer, Dr. Warthrop. "The doctor" turns out to be a monster hunter and he wants young Will Henry to be his assistant thus transporting him into the horrifying world of Monstumology. The series is fairly well written and generally moves at a quick pace. It can definitely be categorized as young adult-horror as some of the scenes in all three books are very graphic and aren't for the faint of heart. I love the juxtaposition of Dr. Warthrop's utter brilliance and complete lack of understanding of Will Henry. I will be eagerly awaiting the next book!

You may also like:

The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan

Darkside by Tom Becker

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

The Reformed Vampire Support Group by Catherine Jinks

Psyche in a Dress by Francesca Lia Block

This is a short haunting book full of sensual imagery and exquisite diction. The first book I have ever read by Francesca Lia Block, Psyche in a Dress is perfect for mature teens who may also be dreamers, poets, artists, mystics, etc. This book is not for those in search of plot; although, the plots of several classic myths lie buried beneath Block’s prose. As I read, shifting perspectives caused confusion; but, then I’d get caught by a distinctive image or phrase. Some chapters are enticing, others should have been edited. I would have liked more specific details about the modern lives of Psyche, Echo, Persephone – just a few of the goddesses/gods described in the book. Overall, Psyche in a Dress is a quick and dreamlike read – perfect for those who enjoy fantasy, magic, love, and poetry.

"Life on the Refrigerator Door" by Alice Kuipers

I was predisposed to like this book...cute cover, cute idea, etc. I expected it to be a glimpse inside the pell-mell schedules of a modern American teen and her mom and the way seemingly innuocous words can tell volumes. Imagine my surprise to find myself reading the chronicles of a woman dealing with cancer entirely via notes with her daughter--who is quite possibly the most self-involved character in modern literary history! Though to be fair, the mother is no prize either...an ob-gyn(an attempt at irony perhaps?) who has little to no physical contact with her daughter.
The writing is shallow and immature and the characters are painfully one dimensional. The book, in fact, reads like a high school literary magazine submission gone horribly public.
Is this really what we're inflicting on YA readers(and their parents?!).
Bad writing aside, the book does leave us with this question: Are our children really raising themselves? Because, if families are operating like the one in this book, our future is bleak indeed.
I definitely do not recommend this one--in fact I'd rather see kids reading "Gossip Girl". At least those parents are involved!!

How to Teach Filthy Rich Teen by Zoey Dean

Well known for her "A-List" series( which I have not--will not-- read) Dean has written a cute novel about a struggling Yale graduate hoping for a career in journalism(yes, you see shades of "The Devil Wears Prada") but sadly can't find a job she feels worthy of her talents and winds up an SAT tutor (yes, you see shades of "The Nanny Diaries") to a pair of debutantes. However, with appealing characters who learn not to judge a book by it's cover, How to Teach Filthy Rich Teens manages to hit some very genuine notes. I hope to see this author continue to develop her talents for realistic (and just fluffy enough for school vacation!) stories.

Chuck Dugan is AWOL

You may recognize the "look" of this book (not quite a graphic novel--"a novel with pictures" according to the author) if you are a fan of Wes "The Royal Tenebaums" Andersen's movies. Yes, they are brothers and Eric has served as Art Director for his brother on his film work. Chuck Dugan is what you would expect: offbeat, oddly charming, and full of clever dialogue. Robin and Sophie finally hook up but Robin has no idea why Sophie likes him! In free verse, popular Sophie choses weirdo Robin "You're a real Murphy" as the love of her life. Only problem is, not one of Sophie's friends and all the other students at High School seem to understand what Sophie sees in the Murphster. But Robin is young, sweet, amorous and totally ga-ga about Sophie, her eyes and her heart. Robin is also an artist with real talent and I loved the classes he audits at Harvard and the great art students he becomes friendly with. You will laugh, you will cry--this is the guy's take on first love and it is amazing.

Stephenie Meyer books

I am the kind of person who reads and loves almost everything I read, but I was never a reader of horror fiction- vampires in particular. But students kept asking for the books after Twilight in the spring and since Twilight was on the Reading Olympic list for '08 I decided to take it home for the summer, read it and make up questions. Well, I am hooked! I read Twilight in July and I couldn't put it down, Meyer has a unique way of writing seductively and from the teen perspective. There is so much angst with Bella and Edward Cullen, you just have to keep reading to learn more about their very different, yet alluring love. My students never minded that the books were 400-500 pages long- they were clamoring for the next one and the next one! I am now halfway through New Moon and once again, the suspense, fear and unrequited love keep me reading! Now I am learning more about Bella and Jacob's friendship/realtionship and boy is this different. When I went to Borders last week to purchase New Moon, my neice told me I just had to buy the 3rd one because it was 30% off and I would be saving money so I purchased Eclipse as well. I don't really booktalk these books (because reluctant readers would see the size and not touch them), the students who are readers come and ask for them in groups so I am more than happy to get these vampire books for our library because they are very read-worthy! So to become an ardent fan of Stephenie Meyer, pick up Twilight and I guarantee you will be seduced!

Behind the Mountains by Edwidge Danticat

What a wonderful, poignant story about a Haitian family whose father, Papa, now lives in New York, toiling for years to bring his family to live with him. Told in first person by Celiane in entries to her notebook, we meet her family who has remained in Haiti, Celiane's mother, Manman, her older, artistic brother, Moy and the many relatives who provide support as they wait for approval to make the move. There is government turmoil and Celiane and her mother are injured in a pipe bomb attack in Haiti. It is a wonderful Christmas present to move to New York to finally be with their father. Once there, Moy and Celiane go to school, which is difficult because of the language barrier, strange surroundings and no friends. We see through Celiane's eyes the joy, sorrow and harshness of being in a new land. We see the beauty of Celiane's house on a mountain and New York through a child's eyes. This is a great multicultural story of how families remain close during separation and make a new life in a new land.

Eclipse

Eclipse - Finally! Her father is dead, her mother is an emotional wreck, and her kid sister April is a brat. When Isabelle is feeling particularly helpless or depressed, she retreats to her bedroom closet and binges on chocolate, chips and pop and then purges it all into the bathroom toilet. After her mother finds out about her little secret, Isabelle is forced to go to "Eating Disorder and Body Image Therapy Group." Isabelle is mortified to enter Group on her first day to discover that she is surrounded by other girls she has nothing in common except the annoying shrink that makes them talk about their 'feelings.' Until Ashley Barnum walks in. Ashley is the most popular girl in school, desired by boys everywhere, and has perfect hair, perfect clothes, perfect grades and a perfect family. She is everything that Isabelle wished she could be. But Isabelle soon learns that no one is ever truly perfect, and that trying to be something she isn't could cost more than she ever imagined.<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

The author tackles some pretty emotional topics in this book, in a way that is suitable and appealing to teens. The book provides a sympathetic portrayal of eating disorders (without being preachy or condescending), while giving insight into the raw frustration and confusion that follows in the wake of a family member’s death, and how these issues can effect surrounding people. A well developed story and believable characters had me completely absorbed into Isabelle’s life and concerned for how the story would end. Highly recommended.

The Secret Twin

The Secret Twin by Denise Gosliner Orenstein and Dan McCarthy (illustrator) is a beautifully-written, spell-binding story narrated from the perspectives of 13-year-old Noah, and Grace, the health-care worker who is taking care of him. Noah, the sole survivor of the surgery separating him and his conjoined-at-the-heart twin brother, lives with his self-absorbed grandmother and the secret guilt of surviving his brother. The current Spook comes to take Thomas as an apprentice, and Thomas's world will never be the same. There is so much to learn, and he can never write fast enough to get all the Spook's lesson notes down in his journal. The end of the previous apprentice is mysterious and scary. Then, there is Alice. The Spook has warned Thomas about girls and women, and Alice does wear pointy shoes. However, when Alice helps Thomas with local bullies and only asks for the promise of help in the future Thomas cannot tell her no. This promise sets things into motion that will prove to everyone just how well suited Thomas is to Spook work. At the climactic moment when Thomas learns about his own power the biggest surprise is that he is not scared, instead he feels empowered to do the right thing. He knows that he understands what must be done, and that he can successfully do it thereby saving those he loves and becoming a true apprentice. This book is not for the faint of heart. Boggarts, witches and ghouls show their terrible practices killing, eating and being defeated. This is a good vs evil story that works out satisfactorily.

Skinny by Ibi Kaslik

While I thought that this book was very well written, a part of me wishes I never read it. Every time I begin to worry the least little bit about gaining or losing weight, I think of Giselle -- the 22-year-old, 1st year med student whose annorexia is taking over/ruining her life. In Giselle's warped mind, even a single bite of food is too much. Because she felt so out of control of her life, Giselle turned to annorexia to achieve feelings of power and discipline. This story is told from the alternating perspectives of Giselle and her eighth-grade sister, Holly. Medical terms and definitions are included, in Giselle's chapters, to make readers more aware of the symptoms and problems associated with this eating disorder. A must-read for teen girls or anyone who works with teens. -- Hestia

Acceptance by Susan Coll

This is not a novel about social acceptance but rather one about college acceptance. After that I was hooked.

“I thought I knew the world.I thought I knew myself.I thought I knew my dearest friend. But I knew nothing at all.”

Incantation is a beautifully written, moving story that takes place during the Spanish Inquisition. It’s about love and hate, loyalty and betrayal, and a 16-year-old girl who has been brought up to believe she is Catholic and her discovery that her family is hiding their true Jewish identity.I had to read more of Alice Hoffman’s books!

Next, I read The Foretelling, an intense, complicated fantasy coming-of-age story about a teen is destined to become queen of the Amazons. While she becomes an expert horsewoman and warrior, she is drawn to mercy and peace.

Aquamarine was next, but read more like a short story than a novel. It’s a sweet coming-of-age novelette for younger readers.

Then I read Green Angel, which I thought was more along the style of Incantation and The Foretelling. When 15-year-old Green’s parents and sister fail to return from the city after an apocalyptic catastrophe, she renames herself Ash as she fends for herself.

Incantation, The Foretelling, and Green Angel are totally different and unrelated stories, but they illustrate Alice Hoffman’s style of lovely, poetic writing encompassing beautiful prose, print and pages.

Alice Hoffman’s Official Page

- Sesheta

Fruits Basket by Natsuki Tayaka

The story is gripping, inventive, and very entertaining. The book itself was difficult, frustrating, and at times completely confusing. And the reason for this is that this manga was published in the original form (but with English lettering instead of Japanese characters), with the story beginning at the back of the book, and being read right to left. This proved very difficult, as the panels were not always horizontal, and the story jumped back and forth, in and out of flashbacks. The story follows Tohru Honda, an orphan who stumbles upon a mysterious family. The Sohma family, made up of three young men who are cousins, agree to let her live with them. She repays their kindness by cooking and cleaning for them. She soon finds out that the young men, Yuki, Shigure, and Kyo, had an ancient curse put on their family. The spirits of the zodiac follow them around, and whenever a member of the family is hugged by someone of the opposite gender, they turn into an animal from the zodiac calendar. Tohru is soon accepted into this family, and agrees to keep their secret. This story is very character-driven, as no real enemy was introduced. The characters are realistic, even in their animal form, and are drawn very well. I enjoyed the story and the new (to me) graphic design. I did not enjoy the book format, but perhaps I will acclimate myself to it, if I continue the series. This is the first book in a series that is at least 15 books long, most likely more. They are first published in Japan, and seem to sporadically find their way to America. This edition included information on the Fruits Basket history and following in Japan, and a brief lesson on the Chinese Zodiac, since much of the plot depends on the reader’s understanding of it. If I had to recommend a manga to a first-time reader, I might not choose this one because of the format and the time-jumping plot. One must be patient in order to read this book. If you enjoyed this book, please consider :
Fiction Recommendation #1 : Fruits Basket, vol. 2 by Natsuki Tayaka. Tohru attempts to lead a normal High-school girl life, but problems ensue when she invites friends for a sleepover, while attempting not to disclose the secret of the Sohma family’s curse of the Chinese Zodiacs.Nonfiction Recommendation #1 : Watching Anime, Reading Manga: 25 Years of Essays and Reviews by Fred Patten and Carl Macek. As an extra treat, each chapter ends with the sheet music to an Irish tune!! -Rhiannon

Award Winners Announced!

Big congratulations to the following authors and illustrators!

******

Caldecott Medal winner:
Flotsam by David Wiesner

Caldecott Honor books:
Gone Wild: An Endangered Animal Alphabet by David McLimans
Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom illustrated by Kadir
Nelson written by Carole Boston Weatherford

******

Newbery Medal winner:
The Higher Power of Lucky by Susan Patron, illustrated by Matt Phelan

Newbery Honor books:
Penny from Heaven by Jennifer L. I am thrilled to see a YA novel delving into religion. I am especially happy to see a book that shows how a Muslim teen deals with other people's misguided perceptions of her religion. What I am not sold on, nevertheless, is the dialogue. So much of it seems forced. I showed this book to a (Muslim) YA patron the other day, and she agreed. She said that she has had multiple conversations with friends about the possibility of wearing the hijab -- "None of my conversations with friends sounded anything like that!" It could just be the fact that the book takes place in Australia and we live in the US. Maybe teens really do talk significantly differently in Australia than they do here; I can't say for sure. Since I am reading an uncorrected proof, I am not even sure that the editors don't plan on "fixing" some of it. What I can say with certainty, though, is that this book is a great starting point for teens who want to learn more about Muslim culture. -Hestia

Harry Potter Title Revealed

More Information can be found at MuggleNet

The Golden compass

by Philip Pullman

The Golden compass is not a new book, but it is one that I have only just read. Since there is a big-budget movie being filmed now, I suspect that the His Dark Materials series will be of interest again very soon.

I found the Golden compass to be very difficult to begin. I started it several times and ended up putting it down before I was finished with the first chapter. This time I determined to stick with it, and I'm very glad I did. Once I was truly invested in the story I found I was hooked!

Lyra is an orphan girl living at Jordan College in Oxford England. She has been allowed to roam free, picking up an eclectic variety of book learning and an extensive street education. Her life begins to change one night when she hides in a closet and witnesses a meeting that is not intended for her eyes and ears. The things she learns that evening catapult her into an incredible adventure, crossing Arctic regions and meeting talking bears, gypsies, witches, and evil humans. Ultimately it is her fate to save the world as she knows it.

Thus begins the His Dark Materials Trilogy. Pullman introduces us to a world very much like our own, yet different enough to feel new and strange. His prose is powerful and beautiful, and worth a chance.

Although Lyra is not a teen, I think that this trilogy would most appeal to older teens and adults. It tackles complex issues and requires thoughtful reading.

MAEVE

Airborn

Airborn by Kenneth Oppel is set in a world very similar to our early 20th century, except that the sky is populated by large airships filled with hydrium, a gas lighter and safer than hydrogen. Matt Cruse is a cabin boy aboard one such ship, the Aurora. Throw in a rebellious young heiress, some pirates, and a hunt for a new species, and you have a perfect adventure, one that will give you just half a page to catch your breath before flying off to the next danger. It was so exciting that I actually snapped at my poor husband when he tried to interrupt during the last chapter. But although the adrenaline level is kept high, this is a book for teens - just one kiss, and a tastefully low body count. When she observes a strange creature climbing out of the hole, she becomes downright curious and heads over to see what's going on. She climbs down the hole and finds herself in a subterranean room connected by a trap door to an underground world. She interrupted by utility workers and is unable to explore, but grabs the first thing she sees--an old book--and returns home determined to learn more about the "Shadow City". The book turns out to be a travel guide of sorts to the underground world, but does not direct her to another opening. She spends the next few months trying to figure a way back. Meanwhile, a strange new girl named Kiki Strike starts attending her school, and Ananka becomes convinced that there is a connection between Kiki and the Shadow City. An aquaintance with Kiki leads Ananka to join forces with Kiki and four ex-girl scouts with interesting skills. The girls set out to map the underground city, and must face killer rats, gangs, exiled Eastern European royalty, and danger of all description before discovering exactly who Kiki Strike is, and what she seeks to accomplish.

Kiki Strike: inside the Shadow City is a fun book. The narrator, Ananka, is witty and intelligent, and has funny insights on life and the nature of adventure and of being a girl. At the end of each chapter she gives helpful hints on such diverse topic as how to follow someone without being discovered and how to escape a kidnapper.

Miller has written a book that is exciting and funny, but which delivers no moral and teaches no lesson (unless you count the practical lessons on being a spy-girl). It is just the thing for a rainy day or a day spent at home sick. I would heartily recommend it to any girl (or guy!) who just wants a quick, light read that doesn't insult her intelligence or preach at her.
MAEVE

An abundance of Katherines

by John Green

Every guy has a "type", and Colin's type is named Katherine.

Colin Singleton is a child prodigy (never call him a genius) who has just graduated high school and teeters on that line between the child and adult worlds. He has also just been dumped by his nineteenth Katherine. In an effort to understand his attraction to Katherines and to figure out the direction of his life, Colin sets out on a road trip. With his best friend Hassan "I'm not a terrorist" Harbish at his side, Colin finds himself in the wilds of Gutshot, Tennessee, where he discovers an Austro-Hungarian archduke, a girl with a thing for guys named Colin, a mathematical equation of cosmic significance, and (possibly) the secret of happiness.

I was not a fan of Green's Looking for Alaska, so I was pleasantly surprised to read An abundance of Katherines. It is a light-hearted, funny, quirky book. I was really sorry to turn the last page and leave Colin and Hassan and all their new friends. An abundance of Katherines is appropriate at upper YAs (14 and up, I think) and for adults who remember what it's like to be a misfit.
MAEVE

Tripping to Somewhere

Ever wish you could leave everything behind and just have fun all the time? He is adapting to a new home and school, and dealing with sleep disorder and bad dreams. After he finds his Norwegian grandfather Sigurd's journal and runestones, however, he becomes more interested--the runes may hold the key to his problems. Soon, guided by his grandfather's spirit and aided by his cousin Kristin, he is leaving his body to visit Viking ancestors. He fights in their battles and lives their lives, discovering aspects of his character that excite and frighten him. Sky's bloody time travels inspire him to go to Norway where he finds that all is not as it seems, and he must battle to save himself and Kristin.

Humphreys obviously knows a great deal about rune lore, and he spends a much time exploring it here. The action is exciting enough to engage a teen boy, but I found that the story bogged down a bit whenever Sky went a-traveling outside his body. This is a bit troubling, since one can only assume that his time traveling will only increase with each new entry in the series. Still, I was interested enough in Sky and Kristin to be eager for the next installment. The Fetch is a good choice for teen boys 14-16 years old who enjoy history and action.
MAEVE

The Wizard, the Witch, and Two Girls from Jersey

In The Wizard, the Witch and Two Girls from Jersey by Lisa Papademetriou, Veronica Lopez is a straight-A fantasy-reading girl, who knows the plot of Queen of Twilight inside and out. Heather Simms knows all about fashion, celebrity gossip, and make-up application, and didn’t even remember that she had a paper due on that book the next day. Normally they wouldn’t talk to each other, even in English class. But when they get in a fight over the one remaining copy of the book in the bookstore, they find themselves in the book, right at the end of chapter two. And after a tragic accident leaves Princess Arabelle, the heroine of the book, shattered on the forest floor, they realize that the only way out is through. Though both of our heroines are better people at the end of the story, character development is not what it’s about. Papademetriou knows her fantasy, from books to movies to commercials: there are both Tolkien-esque High Elves and cookie-baking Kiblar elves. And the silliness of it all won’t keep you from rooting for Heather and Veronica as they try to rescue the Land of Twilight without the help of the author.
Idun

Girl, 15, Charming but Insane

If you have enjoyed reading or listening to any of Louise Rennison's "Confessions of Georgia Nicholson" series you will LURVE this book! Jess is another British girl, so there is a bit of British slang, though it isn't anything too difficult to figure out. Mostly, Jess is a typical 15-year-old girl with a best friend (Flora) who looks like a goddess, another best friend (Fred) who happens to be a boy, and a crush on gorgeous boy (Ben) who doesn't seem to know she is alive. Gemma Doyle, raised in India, is sent to a private girls’ school in England after the violent murder of her mother. Unbeknownst to her, she is accompanied by a mysterious (and highly attractive) young man who seeks her out in order to warn her against the visions that she is increasingly susceptible to. Not only does she have to deal with the loss of her family, her childhood home, and her comfortable way of life, but she has to confront the shadowy clique at her new school known as the Order. All the action takes place in the late nineteenth century, almost a must for any gothic setting, and while Gemma is portrayed as perhaps a more modern girl than is completely historically accurate, the Victorian world is believably seen through the eyes of someone in conflict with it. For anyone looking for a good book to curl up with on a dark and stormy night, this one is a winner.

Saving Jake

Are you curious about the paranormal? If so, Ophelia Julien has a book for you! Corts has a gift called psychometry, but he and Jake just call it "tracking." Corts has always had a special ability to just know where lost things are, and then Jake helped him figure out how to "track" things backward to see their past as well. Sounds simple enough, but not all things have a pleasant past. And when Corts tracks things, he sees and feels so much that he ends up drained, shivering, and sleepy -- often falling into a nightmare about dying in a shipwreck during an icy storm... When Jake reappears in Corts' life, after having been away at prep school for four years, he asks Corts to use his "tracking" again. But how can he? Especially since he has sworn off tracking altogether. To find out why he gave up tracking and why Jake needs him to try again, though, you need to read the book! -Hestia

Firestorm by David Klass - Book 1 of the Caretaker Trilogy

I seem to be in a reading pattern - save the planet!
Jack's parents are not who they seem, and they are both killed while saving Jack from an alien menace. Schwenk is not your typical 15-year-old girl. She is a basketball star who runs a family farm on the side. After her father hurt his hip and her older brothers went away to college, she just kind of took over. No one in D.J.'s family is very good at communicating, so she silently stews about the extra work that is keeping her from a "normal," fun teenage existence. When her dad's friend Jimmy sends a player from the rival football team to help out on the farm that summer, D.J. ends up being his personal trainer. During pre-season, she finds her voice... and her passion for playing football! An excellent read for non-girly-girls, or anyone else who likes football. -Hestia

The Love Curse of the Rumbaughs

Ivy is being raised by her single mother in a small Pennsylvania town. She is never really curious to know anything about her father because her mother's love is all she needs -- prompting her mother to accuse her of having the "love curse" like the Rumbaugh twins, Abner and Adolph, who run the local pharmacy. When Ivy stumbles upon something creepy in the pharmacy's basement, the twins have to bribe her to keep quiet. Since she shares their morbid fascination with death and taxidermy, the twins agree to teach her the latter. As she gets older, though, Ivy starts to understand more and more why the "love curse" has a hold on her and the ends to which she will go to meet its needs. This gothic story of "nature vs. nurture" will likely tickle your funny bone and leave you feeling a little shocked at the same time. -Hestia

Twilight

Isabella Swan (Bella, please) is just your average American teenager. She was living in Phoenix but when her mother remarries and moves to Florida, Bella goes to live in Forks, Washington with her father, Charlie. Bella is absolutely miserable. She soon finds herself embroiled with a family of unbearably beautiful people, The Cullens. There are five Cullens in the school and she becomes quite taken with Edward. After he saves her life but is uninjured himself, Bella begins to wonder about what he could possibly be. After a talk with a member of the Native American tribe of Forks she comes to realize what The Cullens are. Vampires. This is an intriguing twist on the old vampire myth. Meyer's insistance on describing everyone's dialogue is rather tedious but easily ignored. I look forward to seeing what is in store for Bella and the Cullen family next.

Terrier by Tamora Pierce

Tamora Pierce's latest book is a departure from her previous works, and it is also one of her best. While set in her familiar world of Tortall, Terrier takes place more than 200 years before the stories of Alanna, Daine and Kel. Main character Beka Cooper is the many times great grandmother of George Cooper from the Alanna books and like George, Beka is a commoner, born in the worst slums of the Lower City of Corus.

Pierce has traditionally written in the third person, a style that clearly works well for her. In Terrier she not only switches to first person, but to a diary format. Beka resolves to keep a diary as a chronicle of her first year as Puppy (or rookie) in the Provost's Dogs, the police force of Corus. She tries to write her diary just like the reports she will have to make to the Provost and the Magistrate when she is a full fledged Dog, and the result is both an engaging coming of age fantasy story and a compelling mystery. Beka, her Dogs, and an eclectic group of friends work together to solve the mystery of the dead fire opal diggers and the mysterious Shadow Snake who kidnaps and sometimes kills the children of the Lower City for their parents small bits of wealth - necklaces, books, or jewels.

A must read for any Pierce fan and a good entry for readers unfamiliar with Pierce's work. Readers who prefer mystery over fantasy will also enjoy this, as the police work and mystery elements are prominent and for that reason, it may turn off some readers who loved her previous books. Beka is also older than many of Pierce's other characters, as she is 17 at the start of book one. Pierce promises Beka's story will be a trilogy, not her usual quartet. Avid readers should not despair, as this first volume is more than 500 pages.
-Skadi

Dragonsblood by Todd McCaffrey

Always a fan of Anne McCaffrey (Todd's Mother), was so relieved that he has lived up to family expectations! Bo Marsten has trouble controlling his temper even with his daily dose of the drug Levulor. When the snaky Karlohs starts moving in on the girl Bo likes, he lashes out and is sentenced to 5 years making pizzas at a plant in the Canadian tundra. There the warden, Hammer, is running his own illegal football team and recruits Bo for his speed. Hammer arranges a grudge match with a neighboring plant threatening his team with becoming polar bear snacks if they can’t pull off a win. Despite the danger of being pummeled by the opposing team or fed to the bears, Bo can’t help but enjoy the chance to show off his natural athleticism and be part of a team for the first time.

A science fiction combination of Holes and the Gridiron Gang, this book has a lot going for it. There’s a dark look at a future society that values safety over freedom, violence, football, a quirky A.I. creation called Bork, humor, and some really great characters to meet. My favorite was Bo’s cellmate, Rhino, who is in prison for damaging his own health by overeating and is sentenced to stay until he loses 100 lbs. I will recommend this book to those who list Holes amongst their favorite books. Good for 7th grade and up.
p. 249 ISBN 0689868014

- Bastet

Trigger by Susan Vaught

Jeremy Hatch was the all American kid - super jock, ROTC member.
